The Silent Vitamin D Crisis
I write this post, with an
intuitive concern that the majority of my audience reading this, will be
deficient in Vitamin D at some point in their lives (UAE
one of world’s highest in Vitamin D deficiency, 7
out of every 10 Indians are vitamin deficient).
And the concern is
justifiable. Known as “the silent thief” due to its lack of symptoms, this
vitamin insufficiency usually goes unnoticed as symptoms include general tiredness, aches
and pains, difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from the floor or a low
chair, or cause the person to walk with a waddling gait.
We
are taught in school that Vitamin D is needed for growth and development of
bones and teeth, but did you know these surprising researched benefits of D?
·
D fights disease: Addition of D supplements reduce the risk of
multiple sclerosis, heart disease and reduces the likelihood of developing the
flu.
·
D boosts weight loss: Consider adding vitamin D supplements to
your diet if you’re trying to lose weight or prevent heart disease.
·
D fights depression: Research has shown that vitamin D might
play an important role in regulating mood and warding off depression.
The
two main ways to get vitamin D are by exposing your bare skin to sunlight for
as little as 10 minutes of exposure [daily] and by taking vitamin D supplements
as you can't get the right amount of vitamin D your body needs from food.
{Disclaimer: Before taking
any supplements, please check with your GP/ Dietitian to give you a more
personalized recommendation.}
